THE SUBLIME

Husserl gave a series of lectures which were published by Heidegger titled The Phenomenology of the Consciousness of Internal Time. It assumes that like geometry and like rational insight that everyone is in principle capable of his own internal time consciousness.

Both melancholia and the sublime are both connected to the moment in which you will find the least possibility of identifying yourself with the collective.

ORIGINS

For example, Longinus, who is perhaps the best latin auhor on the sublime, was writing at a time when the Roman empire was on the decline. Very much like Augustine in the end of the fourth century. Edmund Burke’s treatise is perhaps the finest in modern times written on the sublime called A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful.
